Marshall McClung
Client Strategist
AKA “Musical McClung“
As a Client Strategist, Marshall helps partner institutions develop comprehensive, custom enrollment strategies that help them stand out and reach their goals in an increasingly competitive market. Drawing on years of experience working on all sides of the desk, Marshall understands what drives students and how colleges and universities can connect with them authentically and effectively.
Prior to joining Spark451, Marshall spent a decade working on college campuses and in high school counseling offices helping students and their families navigate the enrollment process and find their right-fit schools.
A graduate of Hampden-Sydney College (go Tigers!), Marshall also brings a creative edge to his work, with a background in digital marketing, videography, and institutional differentiation. In his free time, he writes and records songs under the name Millworker — an ode to working at his family’s lumber mill as a child.
What do you enjoy most about your position at Spark451 and why?
I love collaborating with institutions to help identify opportunities to help them achieve their enrollment goals and solve institutional challenges. Having worked with all kinds of institutions during my time in higher education marketing, I really enjoy putting together the puzzle pieces that make up a successful enrollment marketing strategy.
How did you choose your profession/why?
Like many in higher education, I think the profession chose me, not the other way around. I applied to be a tour guide when I was a sophomore in college, and the rest is history.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given and why?
Before my freshman year of college, my grandmother encouraged me to “squeeze it like a sponge,” and get everything out of my experience I possibly could. As someone who “floated” through high school, her words really struck me, and I’ve done my best to follow them ever since. I’ve seen the impact college can have on hundreds of students, and it’s why I still carry that advice with me to this day.
When you aren’t busy being a Sparkler, what is something that you like to do and why?
Being a father is new to me, but I have a toddler who is the light of my life (and keeps me on my toes!). Spending time with him, my wife, and our goofball of a dog keeps me busy in the best ways. Additionally, I enjoy running, finding new hardcore/punk bands, and chasing the dream of baking a perfect New York-style cheese pizza.
